Richard Henderson - M.A. (Hons) St Andrews, PGCE Dundee
Director of Studies, Head of English and Year 5 Form Teacher

I first visited Westbrook Hay on horseback in 1970, little realising that I would return in 1998 to teach here. Nor did I realise how much I would want to stay. I love the great team spirit of the staff here; their experience of children based on their own family lives (I have three teenagers of my own and it teaches you a flexible approach to everyday situations); the sheer fun and excitement of the pupils; their random acts of kindness, enthusiasm and occasional insanity! In short, Westbrook Hay is a School where aspiration and professionalism are combined with the opportunity for children to be children, not just learning machines. Teaching here is still so much fun, and I always look forward to getting into the classroom to see my pupils and get down to the laughter and learning. I am Head of English here, and also help with games, boarding and our 5-a-side football league on Tuesday evenings. I graduated from St Andrews University, and have taught in Prep Schools for the past 20 years. I value our shared lives and community and you cannot come to Westbrook Hay, either as a teacher or a pupil, without being effected by the School’s special spirit and atmosphere: a place where we all learn and grow, a place where people are valued.
