DANCE IN THE CURRICULUM
Dance is taught as part of the curriculum from Swallows to Year 2 and involves "Creative Dance" (based around stories) where the children can express themselves freely mainly to classical music. Dance technique which includes "Body Actions" such as: transfer of weight, travel, turn, jump, gesture, make different shapes. Dynamics (energy, time, continuity). Space (personal space, general space, levels, directions, size and pathways. Relationships (in relation to whom or what is being performed).
There is plenty of additional opportunities for the children to learn dance at Westbrook Hay. The children can take ballet lessons from the age of 3 and jazz dancing lessons from the age of 7 as additional activities.
BALLET
The children can take their ballet exams with the ISTD board. Ballet and dance is an extremely popular activity after school on Mondays and Thursdays.
BOYS DANCE
There is a "boys only" dance class on Monday and Thursday mornings where boys are taught a dance routine which they can then show in the Dance Display or Dance Assembly.
DANCE ACTIVITY
Jazz dancing is offered to boys and girls from Years 3-6 on a Thursday afternoon. During dance activity the children learn a dance routine to pop music and if they wish they can take an annual exam with the British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA).
DANCE DISPLAY
There is a Dance Display every year where all children doing dance take part, this is a mixture of modern and ballet dances. We are very proud of our Dance Display, a treat not to be missed!
