Physical Education and Swimming 

Physical education plays a significant role and is taught by a specialist teacher. All lessons are taught in form groups and are therefore co-educational throughout the school.

PE lessons focus on developing core skills and allow children to explore their creativity and logical thinking.

Dance forms part of the curriculum for children in the Lower School up to Year 2 and is taught by a specialist dance teacher. It is also offered to girls and boys in the rest of the school as an extra curricular activity along with Ballet.

In the Lower School, pupils in Swallows and Reception have one 45 minute lesson per week, in Year 1 this increases to two 45 minute lessons per week. The breadth of study encompasses gymnastics, ball skills and athletic based skills.

In the Middle and Upper School, pupils have one 60 minute PE lesson per week. The breadth of study encompasses gymnastics, ball skills, basketball, badminton, uni-hoc, pop lacrosse, dodge ball, handball, short tennis, kwik cricket, outdoor and adventurous activities, cross country, athletics and swimming.

We have a separate Sports Hall which is used for gymnastics along with moveable apparatus but it is also equipped with fixed ropes and an extendable ‘Y’ climbing frame. It can also accommodate most sports such as:

• A full size netball court
• A basketball court
• Four badminton courts which are also used for short tennis
• 5 aside football
• Cricket nets

There is an outdoor heated swimming pool which is used mainly in the summer months. Structured swimming sessions take place to build water confidence and stroke development. Pupils in the Middle and Upper School can choose swimming as an extra activity on a Thursday afternoon where they will be taught personal survival and lifesaving skills by a qualified RLSS instructor.
