Under 9s Rugby Festival
On Sunday 7th March the Under 9 rugby squad participated in the annual festival at Edge Grove. Captained by the lively Tom Holes, we had a strong squad available to play and we were confident we would give most teams a 'run for their money'!
It began even better than that! The boys won the 9-a-side relay that started the event by a canter and then proceeded to beat Arnold House 25-0,securing a bonus point in the process. We were up and running and leading the table! We went on to beat Heath Mount, Edge Grove and Beechwood Park without conceding a try and throughout the afternoon won all of the tug-of-war contests! At the break for lunch we were 1st! When play re-started we lost a tight game against Lochinver - which we did not deserve to (we won't go into their 2nd try!). However, great determination and team work saw us win the next game 30-0 against St Martins with Holes, Busari, Irwin and Yeo all scoring. It was down to the final game against Lockers, who had beaten us by a try the previous week. We needed to win to finish first and in a tight game which saw us have the greater possession and territory we drew 0-0.
We finished 2nd overall - a great performance! In 7 games only one team scored against us and we ran up 16 tries! Billy Busari, who scored 6, was named one of the Players of the Tournament for his dynamic running and try scoring. Our defence was outstanding - something I have been working on all term, with Tom Holes, Jamie Irwin and Alex Wilkinson putting in some huge tackles. The rucking was much improved with Harvey Graham, playing a year up, leading the pack. All in all a superb day, with some great running rugby played! The boys should be very proud of their achievements! Congratulations!
