Singing Workshops for Children, Parents, and Staff

A Westbrook Hay First: Mr. Drew Cantrill-Fenwick Leads Singing Workshops for Children, Parents, and Staff

In an exciting milestone for Westbrook Hay School, Mr. Drew Cantrill-Fenwick, a highly skilled choral trainer, spent the day conducting workshops for our choirs. The event was met with enthusiasm and joy as participants of all ages came together to explore the world of music.

There were many highlights from the workshop but our favourites included

In our 15-strong Pre-Prep Choir, the youngest singers waddled like penguins while singing for 30 minutes. Their adorable performance captured hearts and set the tone for the day.

The all comers’ Choir of 31 participants learned essential vocal techniques, focusing on proper breathing and blending their voices. They sang about spiders, paying attention to rests and consonants, during an intense hour-and-a-half session. The choirs showcased their musical prowess by performing the Super Mario routine, identifying musical elements like crotchets and quavers.

The Consort Choir of 30 children honed their vocal skills, working on voice placement in their heads and chests. They practised controlling vowels and tackled challenging pieces such as “Bridge over Troubled Water” and the iconic “Hallelujah.”

At the end of the day, 15 parents and staff members eagerly participated in their own singing workshop. The warm-up exercises were just as enjoyable as the main session. Smiles abounded as everyone wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to improve their tone and have fun together.

Yann from Year 7, was particularly excited about the workshop. He has already inquired when Mr. Cantrill-Fenwick will return—a testament to the event’s success!
