The Library

  • The library at Westbrook Hay is situated in a beautiful high ceilinged room looking out onto the school grounds. The library is well stocked with over 4,000 items in both the fiction and non fiction categories. The fiction books are chosen to encourage the children in reading for pleasure and the non fiction stock aims to support subject teaching throughout the school.
  • The library is open and staffed by a qualified librarian from 9am – 12pm on Mondays and Tuesdays and from 9am – 2.00 pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Children may visit the library to read or study at break time each morning and classes also visit regularly for reading sessions or in support of project work so that the children can be taught basic information and research skills.
  • The library stock is catalogued using an interactive library software package and each child is given a unique reader id so that they can borrow and return books on a regular basis. Children may borrow one fiction and one non fiction book at a time for a two week borrowing period. Children can choose to become pupil librarians and are given training so that they can help in the library at break times.
  • The library holds regular book fairs and book clubs to further encourage reading and in order to boost funds for the purchase of books. The school also takes part in various schemes designed to contribute to the book stock including the Nestle Box Tops for Books and the Times Books for Schools schemes.

Westbrook Hay Book Club

A book club for parents meets once a month in the library. The range of books covered by the book club is as eclectic as its members, although some books provoke more discussion than others!
