End of term awards - March 2023

End of term awards - March 2023

As the end of term approaches, pupils and teachers look forward to the end-of-term assembly. This term we held it a week earlier as most of our Year 7 & 8 children are in Iceland.

End-of-term awards assemblies are an important part of the school year, as they provide an opportunity to recognise academic, sporting & other achievements. These awards are not just about academic excellence, they also recognise pupils who have made a positive impact on the school community through leadership, kindness and integrity.

Spring 2023 has been another busy term and our end-of-term assembly was a chance to reflect on many achievements and successes.

Henry, our Head Boy gave his reflections on this term. The Townsend-Warner History competition, House Shooting, Drama & Music were all highlighted as successes of the term. Trips included Roald Dahl, Natural History Museum & Luton Gurdwara. This term Westbrook Hay celebrated its 60th Anniversary at this location and Henry spoke fondly of the assembly and pupils leaving their mark on the school.

There were almost 90 awards presented at this end-of-term prize assembly and in addition, colours and effort bars were awarded in rugby, netball, art, design technology & music. 120 children had their achievements recognised across academic attainment, effort and improvement. Awards were also given to children who demonstrate the school values as it is important to understand the importance of how we achieve not just what we achieve.

Oscar gave his sports review of the term highlighting the successes across all the ages. The girl’s netball teams have seen significant improvement and despite a slow start to the rugby season because of the weather, the U10s went unbeaten. There was a wide range of sport played this term with an introduction to Fives and Climbing, and competitive matches in orienteering, aero ball, badminton and swimming to name a few.

The sports awards were for rugby & netball, our core sports this term, and were based on the best & most improved players within each age group. In addition to the awards colours & effort bars were awarded to Year 6 and 8 children and by exception other year groups. The awards and colours reflect a child's performance and attitude in lessons and match both home and away.

The Tring Athletic FC Shield for Resilience was awarded to Freddie who despite injury has continued to give 100% effort to his U13 team.

The end-of-term reports from the heads of our Eco Warriors, Charities and School Council shared many highlights from their work including the work being done on a memorial garden and the preparation for summer planting in the allotment.

The school “values” prizes were given for the following, courage, independence, integrity, reflective learning, responsibility, and togetherness. Nominations were made by members of staff for children who show the school value most of the time.

Finally, the Oliver Gardiner trophy recognises the pupil who has done the most in a term to improve in all aspects of school life, this term the trophy went to James. James played the trumpet in assembly and is clearly an accomplished musician. He showed no nerves as he performed The Pink Panther to the whole of Pre Prep but he had just plated at The Royal Albert Hall. James has worked hard in both the classroom & sports and truly deserves this award.

Dragon was announced as the winner of this term’s House Competition to thunderous applause! There had been 9 House events over the term and a special mention went to Hannah in the shooting with a near-perfect score!

Well done to all of the pupils and particularly to those who received awards this term and we are looking forward to a summer of more.
