Year 1 and Year 2 explore The Box Moor Trust

Year 1 and Year 2 explore The Box Moor Trust

We are very fortunate to have The Box Moor Trust as our neighbours.  The work they do aims to attract wildlife and increase the biodiversity of the local area, so we jumped at the chance to go and visit.

During the first half of the summer term both year 1 and year 2 went on separate trips as part of their Key Stage One Outdoor Learning Curriculum.  Outdoor learning nurtures confidence, creativity and care for the environment and both year groups enjoyed enriching visits.

Year 1 have just finished their ‘Let’s Grow’ topic.  They enjoyed learning about plants and looking at how they provide shelter and food for insects and people.  They were also very fortunate that one of the Box Moor Trustees, David, gave the children a special session on Moths. David spent the evening before catching over 20 different species of moths before talking to the children about them. The children then released them back in to the grass on the meadows.

Year 2’s visit focused on ‘Environments’.  The pupils enjoyed pond dipping and meadow sweeping before looking at lifecycles.  One of their trip highlights was discovering newts hiding in the woods!

We are incredibly thankful to Heather Burrows, Senior Ranger, Environment and Community and her team of volunteers.
