Volcano explorers in Nursery

Volcano explorers in Nursery

This morning in Nursery, the children embarked on an exciting learning journey centred around volcanoes. Inspired by the recent eruption in Iceland, they engaged in imaginative play, constructing their own volcano in the role-play area. As they explored the topic further, they watched video footage of the Icelandic volcano and discussed the dangers associated with volcanic activity, including road closures and cracked roads.

To enhance their understanding, the children watched the short film “I Lava You,” which features two volcanoes in the sea. This sparked their curiosity, leading to a full morning of volcanic experiments. Chef Paul generously provided three key ingredients: vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, and beetroot powder.

First, they created a giant volcano, eagerly anticipating its eruption. The room filled with excitement as the lava flowed across the tuff tray. The children learned that real lava is scorching hot but eventually cools down, hardening into rock. Working in pairs, they then crafted their own mini volcanoes, with the delightful scent of vinegar filling the air—a reminder that real volcanoes emit sulfur.

Exploring the inner workings of volcanoes, they discussed the magma chamber, likening it to a lava bath. The topic of ash clouds also arose, emphasizing that visibility would be severely limited during an eruption, affecting air travel. Overall, it was a captivating and educational experience for the young learners!
