Thank You, Peter Makower

Thank You, Peter Makower

At the end of term,  the Westbrook Hay community gathered to celebrate the extraordinary contribution of Peter Makower, who retires at the end of this academic year after an astonishing 53-year association with the school.

Having joined Westbrook as a pupil in 1973 and returned as a member of staff in 1985, Peter has become one of the defining figures in the school’s history. An exceptional mathematics teacher, he inspired generations of pupils with his ability to nurture confidence and self-belief in every child.

Beyond the classroom, Peter served as Senior Master, provided steady leadership through periods of change, and became a valued custodian of the school’s culture, traditions and history. His commitment to cricket was equally significant, with many years spent coaching the First XI and guiding young players both on and off the field.

Peter’s impact extended across all aspects of school life, from leading memorable PGL and Wales trips to developing innovative remote learning during the challenges of the COVID pandemic. He also played a pivotal role in strengthening connections with former pupils, helping generations of Westbrookians maintain their lifelong bond with the school.

Throughout his career, Peter has been a bridge between Westbrook’s past and present, ensuring that while the school continued to evolve, it never lost sight of its identity and heritage.

On behalf of the entire Westbrook Hay community, we thank Peter for his dedication, wisdom, kindness and unwavering commitment. His legacy will be felt for many years to come, and we wish him every happiness in the next chapter of his life.
