Year 5 boys meet the Sri Lanka one day cricket team

Ten Year 5 boys had the opportunity to play in a pairs cricket festival at Merchant Taylor’s School. Even though we had rain for most of the week we were blessed with a beautiful day for the festival.

In the first game we bowled with great discipline to restrict York House to only 23 runs of their overs. We then learnt a variable lesson that you don’t have to hit out every ball to reach a target! We just lost too many wickets to overhaul their target.

In the second group game played very strong Beacon side. We were never really in the game but our heads never dropped and we battled to the end.

At that point we had a break to meet the Sri Lanka World Cup cricket team! The boys first had the opportunity to watch the team in a training match. They then were able to meet all the players and gained as many signatures as were humanly possible in their cricket bats!

Meeting the international sportsman really inspired the boys to improve their performance in the remaining fixtures. Against St Martin’s we learnt our lesson from the York House fixture. We batted with maturity and won the game by 3 runs.

We were scintillating in our last play off match against York House. We managed to bowl and field with so much skill and focus that York House finished on their starting score of 200. We again batted with great intelligence and won the game by 30 runs.

A brilliant days cricket topped off by meeting Sri Lanka World Cup cricket team!
