Rugby at Merchant Taylors

Westbrook Hay v Merchant Taylor's 20-5

A great start to Westbrook Hays game this week. Starting well by building phase after phase up the pitch WBH found themselves camped 5 meters out from MTS try line, following the possession gained by the forwards pick and drives the opportunistic Adam S slipped off the back of the ruck to score what is becoming a signature move from the scrum half. The focus for us being on the breakdown and our defence this week with Laurie S leading from the front bringing a high level of determination and work rate to be the first to nearly every breakdown and executing dominant tackles.

Charlie Ws communication was heard by all in defence especially Ben O and Lomax T working well as a centre pairing in defence, leading the line in the middle and shutting down MTS attack which lead to forced pressure and mistakes against MTS. Toby D scored in the corner showing exceptional pace and footwork; he would then go on to score his 2nd try just before half time and also make yet again another try saving tackle.

In the second half, replacements Marley M and Max D made a positive impact off the bench by getting over the gain line and looking after the ball in contact. Ben O showed his powerful running breaking the line just outside MTS 22 through the middle to go under the posts for WBH final score. All in all a good come back from WBH after two losses on the bounce. MTS gave WBH a competitive game of rugby right till the end when MTS scored their only try of the game. Next week a challenging final game against Haileybury which we will look forward to in confident mood.
